Traffic management in Seminole county Florida

Advanced traffic management for a large area
Seminole County in Central Florida is comprised of seven cities, covers over 300 square miles and has a population of nearly 425,000 people. The county’s fiber optic-based Advanced Traffic Management System must enhance mobility on arterial roadways using the latest technological advancements that include video surveillance, variable message signs, and real-time traffic information.
Solution
The Traffic Engineering Division of Seminole County maintains a network comprised of over 1,200 miles of active fiber. Originally installed in 1993 to eliminate the outages resulting from lightning strikes that interrupted the functioning of traffic signals, the network has been significantly expanded and improved to provide voice and data services to both county and non-county agencies throughout the area. It also allows the county to transmit video from Bosch HD pan-tilt-zoom cameras to its Traffic Management Center. The cameras are installed at over 200 of the 400 traffic signals along various roadways in the county.
- AUTODOME ITS Series cameras provide overlapping coverage at intersections
- The Bosch Video Management System, Monitor Wall software and multi-channel decoders enable multiple video streams to be displayed on flat panel monitors at the county’s Traffic Management Center, which is staffed by a full-time operator.

Benefit

- Cameras allow real-time monitoring of arterial roadways and signalized intersections, enabling Traffic Management Center operators to verify traffic signal system operation, manage incidents, visually verify timing adjustments real-time, and more
- Low light capabilities of the cameras provide full color video during night time hours with only basic roadway street lighting for illumination
- Video sharing with regional partners – including the Florida Department of Transportation, neighboring counties and local cities within Seminole County – is made easy through the Bosch Video Management System (BVMS). Seminole County manages the BVMS system and allows local agencies to connect to the system using BVMS Client accounts.
- A BVMS Mobile Video Server allows authorized Seminole County staff to remotely view live and playback video when needed
“The county is extremely happy with the best-in-class support and guidance provided by Express Supply, Inc. and with the latest Bosch AUTODOME ITS Series cameras due to their low light capabilities.”
