Prioritizing safety
Within the district, the safety of students and staff is a priority. GCISD’s goals are to achieve a safe, secure, and inviting environment for students to learn in and staff to work in. This is achieved through layered protection strategies, including physical security, technology, and community collaboration. The focus is on both prevention and rapid response to incidents.

Implementing a proactive approach

Technology provides proactive measures to protect GCISD schools. It allows the schools to effectively manage visitor access and respond in a more timely manner during emergencies. The district safety and security team uses Bosch video solutions and products to improve security and safety through visualization and the ability to pinpoint activity and sound. These features support early intervention and help ensure staff can respond appropriately to potential threats. The tools allow for real-time monitoring and faster decision-making, reducing response time during incidents.
Testing AI-enabled video solutions
The district is also exploring how AI-enabled video analytics solutions can help to strengthen security. The district evaluated the Bosch Gun Detection System prior to its release. The system pairs video and audio AI to detect brandished guns and gunshots.
“Participating in the development process allowed GCISD to provide practical input that was used to improve the technology’s effectiveness for school settings,” said Ruben Aldaz, GCISD Security Systems Engineer.

“It was also helpful to have the opportunity for our district and surrounding law enforcement to undergo early training, enhancing our preparedness and enabling us to potentially help guide other districts in the future,” added Allen Smith, GCISD Director of Emergency Management and School Safety.
Key priorities for the district when evaluating the technology were the ability for the system to accurately identify threats with low false alarm rates, along with ease of use and the ability to integrate with existing systems. These criteria ensure the technology would perform reliably in an active K-12 environment.
Achieving a cohesive safety strategy

GCISD is proud of how its students and staff respond to emergencies. It is a testament to the district’s preparedness and training. The safety and security team has put in all the tools it can to achieve a secure perimeter, but it is the students and staff who are the greatest strength in the layered approach of safety and security; it is everyone’s responsibility.
As safety and security challenges continuously evolve, GCISD is committed to adapting and enhancing its systems to meet future needs. At this time, GCISD will continue to expand video coverage at the schools, incorporate more AI-enabled video solutions, and improve integrations with other security platforms as the technology evolves.
