PRAESENSA IP-Based Public Address and Voice Alarm System - based PAGA system
Summary
Project
Cruise ship MS Fram, Panama
Benefits
- Integration into existing infrastructure
- High safety standards
- Future-proof system
Solution
Robust communication system upgrade for cruise ship
The cruise ship MS Fram takes passengers to remote areas such as the Arctic and Antarctic. A robust communication system onboard is paramount to keeping people safe. When the ship’s safety-critical public address & general alarm system (PAGA) became outdated, the technical operator looked for a partner to ensure MS Fram continued to meet the highest safety and communication standards required at sea.
Overhauled with minimal downtime
The operator sought a future-proof solution that could be seamlessly integrated into the cruise ship’s existing infrastructure. The biggest challenge was to overhaul the PAGA system within a tight timeframe, without impacting the ship’s operations.
Due to the redundant nature of the existing system, precisely orchestrated steps were required to ensure system availability at all times. The speakers and cables needed to be reused while onboard network architecture required additional fiber optic and copper connections to efficiently integrate the new system components. Custom adjustments, such as bespoke communication stations and alarm boards, were also necessary to meet specific requirements.
The PREASENSA IP-Based Public Address and Voice Alarm System from Bosch was chosen for its reliability and ability to meet every need.
Successful modular switch without affecting operations
Working closely with the ship’s operator, and in compliance with all safety-relevant regulations, the entire system was replaced within just three weeks at the shipyard in Panama City. The work was carried out modularly, with careful switching between old and new components.
The network was also restructured to meet the latest connectivity standards. Custom modifications, such as communications stations and alarm boards, were integrated onsite. The foghorn was also connected to the alarm in case of an emergency
Overall, scalable PREASENSA solution has proven ideal for the high demands of cruises in remote areas. The main benefits are: A modern, highly available system that is scalable, future-proof, and requires minimal maintenance.
