Frequently asked questions about IP-based loudspeakers
An IP loudspeaker is a network-connected speaker that uses Internet Protocol (IP) technology to receive and transmit audio over a digital network, instead of relying on traditional analog cabling. This allows for:
- Simpler installation in large buildings or campuses using standard IT networks
- Flexible routing and control of audio, including paging, background music, and emergency announcements
- Scalability, making it easy to add more speakers without complex wiring
- Integration with other IP-based systems, such as building management or VoIP solutions
IP loudspeakers are commonly used in commercial buildings, airports, transportation hubs, hospitals, and industrial facilities, especially where centralized audio management and digital system monitoring are desired.
They connect directly to the IT network, eliminating the need for traditional amplifiers and cabling, making installation and scaling easier.
Yes. They support encryption and authentication, ensuring protection against unauthorized access to the audio network.
Yes. Hybrid systems are possible, allowing gradual migration from analog to full IP.
They are especially effective in dynamic environments like offices, retail, and educational campuses where scalability and remote management are key.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that allows standard network cables to carry both data and electrical power to devices like IP loudspeakers, eliminating the need for a separate power supply. This simplifies installation and reduces cabling requirements. To operate PoE devices or loudspeakers you need PoE-enabled network switches or PoE injectors.
There are some limitations and considerations for PoE-powered speakers:
- Power budget: each PoE switch or injector has a maximum power output. High-power loudspeakers or multiple devices on the same switch may exceed the available power.
- Distance limits: standard Ethernet cabling can deliver power up to approximately 100 meters (328 feet). Longer runs may require repeaters or local power sources.
- Heat and cable considerations: high-power PoE over long ethernet cables can generate heat, potentially affecting performance or requiring higher-grade and therewith expensive cabling.
